NECK AND BACK CARE

Northern Rhode Island Physical Therapy can help with acute and chronic neck and back pain resulting from a variety of diagnoses. Types of conditions include, but are not limited to:

Sciatica
Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve and its branches–from your back down your buttock and leg. Most common cause of this pain is tightness in your posterior hip muscles.

Stenosis
This is a narrowing of one or more areas in your spine. This narrowing puts pressure on the spinal cord or nerves that exit the spinal cord. Depending on which nerves are irritated, spinal stenosis can cause pain and numbness in your legs, back, neck or arms; limb weakness and poor coordination; loss of sensation and possibly problems with bowel or bladder function. Pain is not always present.

TMJ Disorders
TMJ disorders cause pain and tenderess in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)–the joint at which your lower jaw bone meets your skull. Symptoms may be present with jaw movements associated with eating, yawn and even speaking.

Herniated Disc
A herniated disc generally occurs in the neck or lower back region. A small central portion of the disc in the ` spine bulges or pushes out into the spinal canal. This can irritate a nerve resulting in pain, numbness or weakness in the arms or legs.

Whiplash
This is a neck injury that can occur during rear-end automobile collisions. When your head suddenly moves backward then forward. These extreme motions strain your neck muscles.
